The namesake hobbit, Bilbo, risks ostracization and even injury or death in a selfless decision rooted in the simple goodness of hobbits. He is scorned and shunned by dwarf Thorin, who acts in greed, for his decision. Following a great battle (like, five armies worth of fighting!), on his deathbed Thorin says to Bilbo, "There is more in you of good than you know, child of the kindly West. Some courage and some wisdom, blended in measure. If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world."
